About Encore Chamber Winds

The Encore Chamber Winds is an innovative and versatile woodwind quintet with a rich history rooted in a passion for diverse chamber music programming. The ensemble was originally established as a reed trio, featuring the unique timbres of the oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. This initial formation allowed the founding members to explore the specialized and demanding repertoire unique to the “trio d’anches” genre.

Driven by a shared desire to expand their musical horizons and offer a wider range of programming to their audiences, the trio welcomed two additional members: the brilliant high register of the flute and the warm, foundational voice of the French horn. This expansion to the traditional woodwind quintet instrumentation unlocked the vast core repertoire of the genre by composers like Reicha, Danzi, and Nielsen, while still allowing the members the flexibility to perform as a trio, quartet, or in other combinations. This versatile repertoire is sure to entertain and connect with all types of audiences.

Known for their seamless blend and dynamic interpretations, the Encore Chamber Winds presents engaging programs that bridge the gap between classic masterworks and contemporary compositions. They have performed at many local venues, including the Carroll County Arts Council, Carroll Community College, and McDaniel College’s Chamber Music on the Hill.

Committed to education and outreach, the Encore Chamber Winds are dedicated to arts education for all ages. In addition to offering chamber music concerts, the quintet has designed an interactive children’s program, using familiar stories such as “Peter and the Wolf” or “Carnival of the Animals.” This engaging program uses storytelling, humor, and live musical demonstrations to introduce young audiences to the instruments, fostering an early appreciation for chamber music.

The professional members of the Encore Chamber Winds, each associated with other performing ensembles, venues, and musical institutions, have united out of their passion to share the wind chamber music repertoire with members of the community.
